Andrea’s Snow Adventure

With winter bringing snow to every mountain surrounding Los Angeles, choosing a cool spot to go for a shoot is all but too easy. You can easily come across snow within an hour drive in almost any direction.

Andrea had the idea to do a photo shoot to promote her fitness in the snow. It seemed easy and cool enough so we headed to our closest mountain.

As we drove up, the temperature quickly dropped below comfortable temperatures. Prepared as always, Andrea brought some warm exercise clothing. I however, had pants and a few layers of shirts and sweaters. I’ve been to the snow plenty of times, but never for a shoot. So I figured since I wouldn't be getting covered by it, I wouldn’t be as cold.

Boy was I wrong…

As soon as we got up to the location, we layered up. We took out the small weights and found a cool spot for her to start warming up and doing some poses. That's when we encountered the first problem.

The weights sank into the snow. The snow was a lot higher than we expected. It was at least a foot high. We had no choice but to look for another spot and not place anything down.

Stomping through the snow, I positioned the flash in various location. Bare bulb to give more light since it was still bright outside although the sun was setting already.

After a few different poses she decided to change into a cool white jacket. At this point, we realized it would be really difficult to find spots where the snow wasn’t covering up most of her feet so we decided to just go for any cool shots we could think of.

I took one of my favorite photos ever here. She blew the snow from her hands and the camera grabbed focus right on her eye. The flash fired, and we got the shot.

After this, the flash started giving me issues and it wouldn’t fire consistently.  The cold started affecting it as well as the drop in temperature was starting to get us.

We decided to call it a day and head back down before it got too dark.
