StreetmeetLA 2022 - Airport

Most of the events that StreetmeetLA hosts are pretty cool. They don’t do them as often as they used to, but I think it’s because they are trying to get locations that are a little more difficult to secure than the prior ones.

This airport is one that they’ve booked a few times in the past. It’s so cool to be able to walk up to some airplanes and model on them. Most of the owners are super happy to have their planes photographed too, so it’s always a good time.

This time around, they also had a VW car show on the other half of the airport. They arrived before the photo event and were supposed to leave an hour after we arrived.

However, once they realized it was a photo group, a lot of them wanted their cars to be used as well. The band even decided to stay longer and do another set.

The event was hosted by Stella Pro Lights. They were having a raffle as well. The only prize was a $700 flash. This flash was powerful enough to compete with the sun at a very close distance, but it wouldn’t work if you diffused it.

They had a spokesperson showing us how to use the flash as well. He was specific about how we could use it in bright daylight since it was a small unit. That’s perfectly normal, but I was impressed at how well it worked.

When the raffle was announced, I was 1 number off from the winner. I honestly thought I was going to win it. It would have been so dope if I had won it. It would have been a great addition to my kit.

The models were all fantastic, as always. The most popular ones were the duo of a redhead girl and her short partner. They were a professional model duo and were so generous with all the photographers. But of course, there’s always one photographer at every photo meet who makes sure to direct the models toward them and away from all the other photographers. He was glued to the duo, so I only spent a few minutes with them.

The other models were all great too, though. Everyone had their own style, which is always a plus. I shot most of it in natural light because it was so windy, so I made a choice to only shoot in certain directions adjacent to the sun.

I didn’t enjoy shooting the cars as much as I thought I would. They were fun, but since all the cars were so close together, it was a bit difficult getting the wide shots I wanted. Since the cars were cool, I didn’t see any sense in doing close-ups and cropping out most of the vehicle.

I ended up using the bare flash without any modifiers for the last photos of the model dressed as an angel. They came out great. I liked the different mood the flash gave too.

The band played as we were finishing up. They were really loud and cool. They were pretty drunk toward the last few songs. I think that made it even better though. I had so much fun listening to them. I missed a lot of models because of them.

They finally kicked everyone out of the airport, and we left. I didn’t exchange IG with the models this time. I completely forgot. I had to find them through the other photographers, which really wasn’t hard.

I can’t wait for the next shoot.
