Connecticut

Nature has always been something I’ve enjoyed on a very intimate level. There’s just something about empty roads, dense tree fields and that feeling of being away from modern life that fills my soul with profound joy.

I know there’s plenty of states that have beautiful landscapes that fit perfectly for this tour of lifestyle. Lots of friends and other photographers are quick to teen you their favorite “nature state”.

But there was something about being in this state at this particular moment in time that made me fall in love with it. From the air we breathe to the old historic buildings, there was something to love all around me.

The long roads that cut through the state are all the same. They are small paved roads divided by short walls and lots of empty grassland in-between.  The sides are all covered by lush tall trees making it seem like no matter where you are, nature is right by your side.

The cities are small and cozy. Rain, cloudy or sunny days all have a feeling of comfort and uniqueness to them. The rain makes everything have a shine to it. From the leaves on the trees to the ones on the floor, the rain gives them a moody texture that doesn’t feel sad.

Cloudy days bring a cool breeze with them that wraps around you with a pleasant chill. It’s like you’re experiencing Autumn in the summer. It’s especially beautiful to me because autumn happens to be my favorite season.

Sunny days also have a comfort to them. They make you want to go out and explore. With no fences to prevent you from going into any public region, you can park your car along the road and walk into an area full of trees and explore to your hearts contempt.

Heading east you find more cities. All of them small and interesting in their own ways. I checked out what New London had to offer with a few mom and pop restaurants and some tea and coffee shops. All of them amazing of course.

The owners were all so nice. They all talk to their guests and even offer small samples of desserts for you to try. That was really surprising to me. I’m not a dessert type of guy but not wanting to be rude, I tried their dessert every time they offered, which ended up being in most of the restaurants.

All the coffee and tea shops were full of memorabilia that identified with the owners. So unique. I don’t think I saw any big chain coffee shop in these towns.

Driving back to my hotel at night was kind of scary at times. With the only light on the road coming from my headlights, slow and careful was the name of the game. Darkness falls quick all around you and animals tend to run across the road at random spots giving you seconds to react.

I contemplated stopping to take some night photos but ended up being too scared of being stranded without any cell service in these areas.

The few weeks I spent here was enough to make me fall in love with this state. It’s such a big difference from the overpopulated cities around Los Angeles. Something you tend to just accept and get used to after a while.

It’s certainly made me feel like that the fast paced lifestyle in the big city is taxing on your mind, body and soul.

Slowing down to admire some nature at any time you want is so underrated. I couldn’t help but wonder if maybe this is a state I’d like to retire in.
